Better Value Better Outcomes
- National respiratory event February 2013

The DH respiratory programme and NHS Improvement held the event Better value, better outcomes How to deliver quality and value in chronic care:  sharing the learning from the respiratory programme in London on 21 February 2013.

The event combined a number of keynote speeches with 20 parallel sessions looking at the range of resources, support, improvement tools and techniques to improve respiratory care and servcies, reflected across the five domains of the NHS Outcomes Framework.

There was also a competition for academic posters from NHS teams and people working around respiratory care.

Background to the event

The NHS spends around £2bn a year on respiratory disease. There is significant variation in outcomes across England – a four fold variation in admissions, a two fold variation in mortality. However, a wealth of support, practical help and guidance for clinicians, commissioners and service managers has been produced over the past three years as part of the respiratory programme to help improve outcomes and reduce variation.

This one day event provided an excellent opportunity to learn from others on how they have improved respiratory services locally.

At this event, delegates learned:

  • From Anna Soubry MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, about the Government’s policies for the NHS and how they will help to drive improved outcomes
  • From Professor Mike Richards and the National Clinical Directors for Respiratory Disease, on how to work within the new structures to deliver improved outcomes
  • From experts in the field about how to deliver ‘quick wins’ in respiratory care, and the range of learning, tools, support and products available to help individuals and teams to improve respiratory and chronic care services
  • The practical steps to implement the Outcomes Strategy for COPD and Asthma (which brings together the requirements of NICE Quality Standards, the Commissioning Outcomes Framework, QOF and the NHS Outcomes Framework)
